The first and last of the five pieces may be considered as an interplay of expressive contrasts. The second is an invention of an atonic character. The third is an kind of anti-romantic waltz, while the fourth piece is the simple evocation of the night with its murmurs and fading sonority.

Climes I has only one movement and is conceived in complete freedom, both in its harmonic aspects and its formal aspects. It is a lyric rhapsody where some chords and certain sequences act as structural elements in the composition, with the central part being poco scherzando to balance the score.

Climes II is based on its predecessor Climes I —composed a year earlier for clarinet and piano— and similarly, has a single movement with a free structure. The intervallic element is evident throughout the work and only in the central part (Calmo) do we find that the melodic line is more static.
