The Concert per a piano i conjunt de cambra (Concerto for piano and chamber ensemble) was composed in 1963 and was awarded the Schola Cantorum de Paris’ Composition Prize, Joan Guinjoan’s place of study at the time. The author describes the piece as follows: “It is a rather ‘raw’ piece. I consider my musical catalogue to have begun in 1965, so this piece is from the days before what I see as the ‘mature’ Guinjoan period, but even so, it has its charm. The piano part is most impressive –I had just finished my piano training and so wanted to write a piece where the use of this instrument was developed to the max–, but the thing that connects this concerto to the rest of the pieces in my catalogue is its rhythm: I have always been fascinated by rhythm, and even now rhythm remains one of the most prominent features of my pieces”. The piece was debuted by the Municipal Band of Barcelona in 1982, with the solo part played by Liliana Mafiotte.
