Lorca through the looking glass

DE703

The texts in this work, with the great issues of the Lorquian universe, have short verses with their evocative images and very precise rhythm and are enveloped by the piano music with the aim of underlining the very diverse nature of the poems, often accentuating the contrasts they suggest.

This composition aims to perpetuate a type of performance that, to a certain extent, has been forgotten yet in the past was much more widespread than today: the combination of narrator and piano.
The general requirements of this type of work made it necessary to source short texts that could be interspersed with the music without interrupting the sense of continuity. The Primeras Canciones (First Songs) by Federico García Lorca from 1922 seemed perfect for what I wanted to achieve.
The text is defined by the great issues of the Lorquian universe: love, death, nature and time. These short verses with their evocative images and very precise rhythm are enveloped by the piano music with the aim of underlining the very diverse nature of the poems, often accentuating the contrasts they suggest. The music includes certain sounds rooted in popular Andalusian music, whether in the use of certain ethnic methods or the characteristic rhythms of flamenco.
Although the work actually encompasses eight of the poems from Primeras Canciones, it has been conceived without separate parts as a flowing whole that amalgamates text and music.
