Xavier Gols i Soler (Tarragona, 1902-1938) started learning the piano and violin from his father, a composer and orchestra conductor. After winning the newly-established Pau Casals scholarship in 1927, he moved to Barcelona to further his piano studies with Blanca Selva and his composition studies with Baltasar Samper. Some of his most notable compositions include Quintet en re menor (1934) for strings and piano, De les terres altes (1936) for piano, Quatre impressions per a piano (1936), and Tres preludis rurals (1937) for piano and chamber orchestra, as well as the constant production throughout his life of songs for voice and piano.
