Debout, Maurice! is a piece commissioned by ensemble Kebyart to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the French composer Maurice Ravel.
The title refers to a colloquial expression used to wake someone up, which in English would be equivalent to “Get up, Maurice!” or “Wake up, Maurice!”. Following Ravel’s characteristic style, this composition unfolds as a short musical narrative—a piece of programmatic music that portrays the composer waking up in a morning of our time.
Through the music, we hear the alarm clock that startles him, his initial confusion, and the temptation to fall back asleep. The alarm rings again, and this time, Ravel decides to get up. The piece evokes memories of his past life, shifting between moments of joy and nostalgic longing. At the same time, we witness his discovery of the contemporary world—an experience that is both overwhelming and exhilarating. Finally, after this whirlwind of sensations, he drifts back into sleep, returning to the essence of who he has always been.
